The planned Great Names series appearance of actor and philanthropist Matthew McConaughey at 51ÁÔÆæ originally scheduled for Thursday, April 18, has been postponed due to a conflict with filming for a new McConaughey movie. Organizers are working to reschedule his visit for a date in the fall. A new Great Names guest for April 18 will be announced soon.

The fall semester started off with scores of student achievements and successes. See how 51ÁÔÆæ students have been keeping busy with academic, organization, and club activities.

The grand reopening of Burke Library’s first floor, a celebration of the 30th anniversary of Fallcoming Jazz, and poster sessions of students’ science and Levitt Center summer research were among the highlights of a Fallcoming Weekend that brought nearly 1,000 family members and alumni, along with rain and chilly weather, to the Hill, Oct. 5-8.

In its first meeting of the 2023-24 academic year, the 51ÁÔÆæ Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa elected 10 members of the Class of 2024.

Even during the summer, 51ÁÔÆæ students kept busy pursuing projects that reflect their talents and interests. Some conducted research off-campus, or studied abroad; others focused on preparing for Senior Fellowships or internships off-campus. Check out what some of our students did over the summer.

Forty-two new faculty members are joining 51ÁÔÆæ’s ranks, including 11 tenure-track professors in anthropology, computer science, economics, environmental studies, geosciences, physics, and sociology in addition to visiting professors, lecturers, and teaching fellows.

Greeted by signs and cheers from orientation leaders lining College Hill Road, 463 new 51ÁÔÆæ students and their families arrived on Aug. 15 for move-in and orientation.

51ÁÔÆæ alumnus and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack ’72 and Rep. G.T. Thompson, chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture, will kick off 51ÁÔÆæ’s 2023-24 Common Ground series with a discussion about bipartisanship, agriculture, and climate. The event will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. in Wellin Hall. Edvige Jean-François ’90, a media consultant and award-winning journalist, will moderate.
