We follow the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for respiratory infections including COVID-19, influenza, and RSV. Specific links can be found on the Health Center webpage.  We also think this guidance works when managing other fever-related illnesses.

Strategies

  • Individuals should stay put in their dorm/home if they are not feeling well and running a fever
  • You should not attend class, athletics, work, or social activities until you meet the criteria listed below for at least 24 hours:
    • Your symptoms are getting better overall AND
    • You no longer have a fever without the use of fever-reducing medication (like acetaminophen and/or ibuprofen)
  • When returning to normal activities, you should take precautions for yourself and the safety of others.  This includes hand hygiene, masking when appropriate, and being respectful of those around you
  • If you are immunocompromised or have a chronic medical condition that may place you at higher risk for complications, please contact your healthcare provider to review your symptoms and management strategies.  If you require additional guidance, contact the Student Health Center at 315-859-4111 to discuss

Symptom Management

  • Make sure to manage good self-care, especially when you are sick
  • Sneeze, blow your nose, or cough into a disposable tissue, and discard the tissue immediately into a waste bin.  Then make sure to wash your hands with warm, soapy water or use hand sanitizer if you do not have access to a sink
  • Do not take any medication to which you have a known allergy
  • Use over-the-counter analgesics (like acetaminophen and/or ibuprofen) per the package instructions for symptoms of fever, sore throat, and body aches, unless you are allergic
  • If you are taking any prescribed medications, please check with your medical provider or pharmacist before taking any over-the-counter medications
  • Push fluids such as water, herbal teas, and sports drinks for hydration
  • Get extra rest to help your body heal

Roommate Strategies

  • Wipe down shared surfaces with a disinfectant (like Lysol or Clorox wipes)
  • Please work to communicate with each other to respect each other’s needs
